Subletting as a Prospective Student - Where do I start?
Hello,

I'll be starting McMaster in September after getting accepted in January, and I am super excited.

Anyway, because I was so ecstatic, I jumped the gun and already made accommodations on a off-campus house. Of course, the lease starts in May - so now I find myself scrambling to find someone who is interested in staying for the summer.

Here's the problem: Being student who has yet to start McMaster, who does not yet have a McMaster e-mail address to access the Marketplace here, nor the extra funds to purchase an account on MacOffCampus, I do not know where to go to advertise this really great room in an all-girl house that is less than 10 minutes away from McMaster, and is pretty much situated on Main Street.

So now my question is, what approach should I be taking, and where would be a good place to advertise for this summer sublet that will not attract non-students, or shady individuals?

Thanks in advance!

It is really, really hard to sublet a summer room because most people want to do that. You likely won't get it done, I think it was kind of a big mistake renting out a room already, there's tons you could have rented starting in September.

You could try Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace and putting up posters around the area. Don't get your hopes up though, it's hard to find someone to sublet in the summer.

If you looked hard enough, you could have gotten an eight-month lease.

You'll find lots of summer sublets, pretty hard to lease in my opinion. Maybe take some summer school courses?

Think of the positive side, living on-campus is not that good. double room, triple room, less private space for your self. Plus, the total cost of living off-campus is cheaper than on-campus, so you do not have a loss. I think you made the right decision. give up looking for summer sublet.
