Summer jobs at Mac that are hiring now?
I've seen a bunch of posts about jobs for last summer at McMaster. Are there any that are hiring for 2009 summer NOW?

I always have such a hard time finding summer jobs. One of my biggest problems is that most of the jobs offered at Mac are Work-Study, which means you need to have applied for OSAP (which I don't do).

I've checked OSCAR, been in touch with profs for RA positions, checked the MSU website and there's nothing. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? I would like to apply now/soon because if I can't find a job here, I'll be spending the summer in another province, which I need to arrange beforehand.

Thanks!

Some jobs hire up to 12 months in advance for student work, actually.

So yes, come January a lot of jobs at Mac will DEFINATELY be hiring. There should be postings on OSCAR, departmental websites, faculty websites etc by the end of the first week of school (everything is closed now, so no new listings will be going up until at least January 5th). A lot of the services (career services, FYEO, alumni etc) hire around this time as well. MSU management positions usually start in about late January or early February.

Even if you don't intend to use OSAP you can always apply to make yourself eligible for the Workstudy jobs. I seem to remember some Univ. adviser saying that to me

applying for osap and being eligible for osap are two very different things.
you can still find a job at mac if you're eligible for osap (even if you haven't necessarily applied)
Also, McMaster does offer various positions for those who aren't eligible for osap. I recommend you head over to career services and discuss your options with them. they can show you how to utilize the search engine to get non work study positions =)

Some of the MSU management positions are actually online now along with poll clerk positions for the upcoming presidential, referendum, by-election and SRA general cycles.

Please note though that quite a few of the MSU management positions do not pay over the summer but may still require some work to be done in preparation for the new year.

Where are they listed online? I checked the MSU website but I didn't see anything. Thanks!

They should all be listed here https://www.msumcmaster.ca/jobs/overview.htm

You'll need to create an account to apply and or view the job descriptions.

Wages, including whether or not they recieve summer pay is listed under Student Government >Bylaws and Policies> MSU Operating Policies> Operating Policy 2.2

Thanks for that link. I had been using a link from msu.mcmaster.ca that had nothing on it - I guess it was out of date.

Most of the jobs listed (right now) are "director" and "coordinator" jobs. Would it be a good idea applying for those if you have little previous experience? I've read over the job descriptions and I understand them, but "Balance budget of $5000" and "Public speaking skills in order to run workshops/seminars" seems a little much for a third year student.

Are these jobs meant for students, or people who have graduated university and have experience for these kinds of things?

Sorry if that sounds stupid.. I'm just not sure. Thanks!

To work for the MSU (Board of Directors jobs being the exception, as you can work after graduation. Some of the full-time director positions you can also have after graduation too) you have to be a full-time undergrad student, so yes they are all student jobs.

I'm a Manager (technically Internal Coordinator by job title) for a service actually. And one of my co-managers didn't work at the service the previous year and was hired.

Just to add onto what lorend said, these positions are designed for students so don't let the titles or job descriptions intimidate you!

I was a manager in my fourth year and while it seems like a lot on paper, Part Time Manager workloads are manageable so long as you can prioritize things and manage time effectively

Other than that link I can't seem to find any info on wages on different positions, I'm assuming that's what you re looking for. I could be wrong on that assumption tho lol

Yeah, sorry about the Operating Policy thing, we seem to be having a fairly high amount of technical hiccups with the new website. I'll talk to the Network Admin tomorrow morning about solving the problem. I'll let you all know when it's up and working.
