Summer School
To start, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this topic, but it seemed to be the most fitting compared to the others. I'm sorry if it's in the wrong place.
My question is, how do tests for the summer terms work? Are they in-class? At the moment, I have a full day of classes (basically, 9am - 9pm, with some breaks in between) on Tuesday for term two, and I'm worried about missing class for tests (an early write doesn't quite work).
Thanks,
Afrisa

I had summer school last year and they did do all the tests in class, including the final exams. I'm not sure if it is like this for all classes, but that is what I found out. Hope it helps.

Thanks for posting the question Afrisa! It's a good question.
From what I've been told by students who have taken summer school courses, is that the exam is during the last class. Usually summer school courses are twice a week and last 2-3 hours... so it's enough time to complete a full exam in-class.

Does Mac offer any courses online?
I've been searching around the website for awhile, and I can't seem to find anything. I'd like to take a course or two over the summer, in order to lessen my workload for next year, but living 2.5 hours away makes that a bit of a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Mac does not offer online courses. But, you can take courses at other schools, provided they are equivalant to a course offered at Mac.

Yes, it appears no courses are 100% online. However, most courses use WebCT or Learnlink for materials that you can access from home or anywhere.
You can see a list of courses on WEBCT by visiting their website. Courses using the system over the summer are: - Bachelor of Technology Administration
- BIOLOGY 1P03: Introductory Biology
- CHS-REHA: Leadership in Rehab
- COMMERCE 3BC3: HR Management
- ECON 1B03: Intro Microeconomics
- ECON 2G03/2X03: Intermed. Microecon
- ECON 3T03: Topics in Development Eco
- ECON 3U03: Econometrics I
- ENGINEER 4B03: Engineering Economics (Spring)
- FRENCH 4R06: Reading French
- HTH RS M 742: Ethical Issues in Research
- MEDRADSC 3DE3: Introduction to MRI
This doen't mean that they are purely online courses, but the courses above plan to use WebCT which means you would be able to access lecture notes and materials online.

I was wondering.. do your summer school marks go towards your average? Sounds dumb, but counsellors have been telling me and my friends otherwise.

They go towards your cummulative (overall average) but not your average from the past year or the upcoming one.

So Im taking Econ 2X03 right now.. lets say I get an 8 in it. Then we fast forward to September.. Let's say I get an overall average of a 6. The 8 wont affect it?

if you take summer school courses at mcmaster, it does count towards your average. If you take it at another university (on a letter of permission), the course mark will not be seen on your transcript. On your transcript, it will list the course and as "COMPLETE" if you get above a certian average, for sciences its C+. If you get below that average, it will say "INCOMPLETE".

So let's say to get into an Honours program you need a 7 in a certain class (let's use Psych 1A03 as an example). Lets say someone gets a 5 in Psych 1A03; If they take the course somewhere else (online, another uni, whatever) and they get the 7, do you think the faculty will put them in honours? I know they see the mark, it just shows up as Complete or Incomplete.

I'm not sure. But Mac is sort of snobby when it comes to courses at other schools. Hense why we are marked on a complete-incomplete scale. I would say no...but as I said before I am not sure.
