Definitely. You should start preparing to miss any of your upcoming exams, because there's no way it could possibly pass in that amount of time.

Also, be wary of people who are bald. That means they have cancer and if they touch you, you'll get cancer and die.

Oh Cheri, I seriously love you.

Uhm, yeah, remember how idiotic we all sounded when there was like mass paranoia about the first wave of Swine flu? Well, you're all sounding awfully nostalgic. But I guess the fear of failing midterms will do that to you.

Paranoia would include me worrying about dying from swine flu. Getting swine flu is a realistic scenario, not paranoia

So is getting hit by a bus.

Some one else posted 1 in 8,000,000,000 is the odds of getting swine flu.
Seriously, just wash your hands after you shit, masturbate, or ride a bus.

Everyone I know has recently been sick, including myself. Then again, I remember everyone being sick around this time last year too. But yeah, it's easy to say "wash your hands etc." but the reality is, people don't practice proper hygiene all the time.

Which is why I'm telling people to stop being disgusting and just wash your hands.

If you piss on yourself, soap it up! Easy concept.

One of the reasons why people are worried about H1N1, is that unlike the regular flu, it targets healthy adults and is more likely to cause death due to an overactive immune response (vs. children and elderly who have weaker immune systems), given that there are no other respiratory illnesses. The most susceptible at the moment are women in their 30s. Immunologists have been warning about this for ages, but the Canadian government was too stupid to listen (elderly & children first!). I'm not worried, but I would like to avoid the hassle of getting sick.

Hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of any type of flu. Unfortunately most people don't wash their hands properly (scrub between the fingers, under the fingernails) or they'll rinse their hands in running water which does absolutely nothing and dry their hands inadequately. Still, influenza is still also spread through respiratory droplets. So they want to prevent people from coughing/sneezing in crowded classrooms where coughing/sneezing may have more of an impact.

Also, avoid touching your face. Most people do it subconsciously - about 20 times an hour. The eyes, especially, are a common route of entry.

Being blasé about it is as ludicrous as being paranoid...

Swine flu is not something that we really need to be all that concerned about. Yes, let's try to prevent everyone from dying, but it IS going to spread, and there's nothing we can do about that.

Also, don't be a hypochondriac. Those people are annoying.

A note to anyone planning to abuse this self report link: you have to log in with your Mac ID. I'm sure McMaster follows up with every single person who self reports themselves as having swine flu, since Mac is making such a big deal about it.
I wouldn't abuse this system. I have no doubt that Mac will follow up with these people and those who lie are going to get caught.

I used the self reporting tool a few weeks ago; I knew perfectly well that it was quite unlikely to be swine flu, but the instructions we're given are "flu like symptoms"; they tack on a cough/fever, but those can come and go.

I was pretty sick though (I'm going to say it was a really bad cold), so didn't feel bad about using it. I only missed a tutorial. When I went to get a missed work form from my faculty, I asked about how they were going to stop students from abusing it since there is no real accountability. They said that they wouldn't; if the students want to skip school, then fine. It's not the school's problem. In the end you're just hurting yourself if you abuse it to miss tests and the like.

This isn't high school anymore....... no one cares!

Of course, if you're sneezing every five seconds/coughing up a storm, please stop coming to my lectures. It's hard enough to hear some profs as it is. And I don't want to get sick again.

So if someone actually has swine flu and they use the self-reporting tool and miss an exam, they lose 50% of their mark? (or however much it's worth)

I can't imagine them not having rewrites for people who use it. o_o or does the self-report only apply for marks missed from tutorials?

No. Usually the way it works when you miss something (for most courses - at professors discretion though) is the weight of whatever you missed is added to something/redistributed. Some profs will let you rewrite, but they are in the minority.

If you miss an exam, then you are "deferring" it. If you miss this December, you write during reading week. If you miss a final exam during the winter term, you write it at the end of June.

You don't lose any marks for using the swine flu tool; that's the entire point of it.
