They have to strike to get strike pay.
If they decide not to strike they will be considered scabs and can be punished by the union.
So no, they may not legally HAVE to strike but for a lot of reasons they unfortunately may feel pressured into striking even if they don't believe in it personally.
This PDF looks so friendly compared to what CUPE has actually said about strike breakers.

I haven't heard anything about my communications tutorial (2C03) and this is the one I'm most worried about. We have group presentations every week in these tutorials and even missing one week of this tutorial will back us up in terms of presentations. This could potentially be a disaster since half of the groups have done presentations and the rest still have yet to do. I don't blame my TA if they decide to participate in the strike, I just wish things didn't have to do be this week. This strike could make this tutorial a mess.
I guess I'll have to hope against hope for the strike to be resolved by Wednesday, or at the very least by next week so the presentations aren't messed up too greatly. We can handle 1 week with 2 presentations if need be.

No, they don't get strike pay, but they DO GET THEIR REGULAR PAY. Also, the university in NO WAY will PUNISH THEM. That is not only counterintuitive, but it is also highly illegal. Please, please, please be informed. This is all I ask.

In no way to I want to flame, blame, or otherwise call anyone out. I just want everyone to be informed about all sides to this game. There are three distinct players: CUPE, the actual TA's and the University. It's important to have the whole story...

Here's something we can be in agreement on.
I'm anti-CUPE, pro-TAs and neutral on the University.

Anyone have any ideas for small tokens of appreciation for TA's who are scabs/champs?
Personally I think the MSU should make "Student's Hero" buttons for them.
