from what i understand percentages are converted to a 12 point scale. So does that technically mean that a 90 percent is treated the same as a 100 percent (since they both convert to 12)? its your GPA that matters to graduate schools, not the percent right?
thanks

Yes, that's correct.
Always good to aim high though.

Scholarships and whatnot - getting a 98% final in a course may allow you to get certain bonuses compared to getting 90%.

Eh yea, but if you aim for a 90 you're less likely to actually get it than ifyou aim for 100.

In terms of GPA, there is essentially no difference, but as mentioned above, in terms of scholarships, being top in class, etc, it would definitely make a difference

Nobody 'aims' for a mark. They do their best. Stupid thread.
Even if you attain a mark where you'll get 90% if you get 0 on an exam, theres no reason you'd not try hard on the exam anyways.

um..if I had other exams to study for, and could get away with a zero while still getting 90 on one, preeetty sure I wouldn't study for it. Prioritizing etc.

No you wouldn't. You would put higher value on the time spent studying for other exams, but you wouldn't skip the exam itself.
Working hard to get a mark over 90 means you put in the extra effort to study the material and learn and incorporate the course material into your brain. If you didn't have the incentive to say, get a mark over 70, because you're fine with a B, then you're a B kind of person. Getting the full grasp of the material gives you considerable advantages other than the grade point...

There is no need to 'aim' for a particular mark. Do your best, work hard, and learn the material. If you know the course material and you can prove it, getting a 90% versus a 94% mark shouldn't be a big concern. Plus if you get a really high mark you can be pleasantly surprised. Try just learning the course content because its enjoyable not because its tied to some numbers on a sheet of paper.

Always wise to aim high, because if you aim for a 90 and end up with an 89 you'll be pissing yourself about trying harder for that one more percent.

Some courses have a scholarship for the person who gets the highest mark.
