is there a way to calculate the cost of textbooks before school starts?
r do we need to purchase after class starts so then we know which textbooks to buy?

The booklist comes out on the 5th. You can calculate it then (titles.mcmaster.ca). Prices are only for Titles though, you can probably get them cheaper from students.

Note though that right now only the Spring/Summer list is available. It's still kinda early to even worry about textbooks. IMO wait till after the first few classes and see if you really need the textbook!

It's better to attend the first day of class for each course and see what prof thinks, they usually discuss the course outline and go through every section regarding schedule, academics, required material, marks, exam stuff, academic dishonesty, etc. they sometimes tell you that the required textbook is optional even though its required.

As Jeremy mentioned, the booklist comes out on the 5th, however, you can always get the textbooks cheaper that what the website says if you buy them from other students. Check the marketplace on here, or facebook groups. There's usually a lot of people selling their old books.
