How are they doing this math?

Alright, SOLAR just spit out a whopping $995.59 for the *ahem* "supplementary fees," however I just don't understand how they came up with this bizarre number, I wished they would break it down a bit more.

So I clicked on the supplementary fees link and here is what I thought applies to me;

Quote:
source:http://www.mcmaster.ca/bms/student/p...s_included.pdf
Students taking 18 or more units pay:
Student registered in 18 or more units at ANY time during the session will be reponsible for the following
fees:

Athletics & Recreation Activity Fee 112.25

Student Health Services 57.43
Solar Car 1.07
Engineers Without Borders 0.37
Ontario Public Interest Research Group 7.57
(OPIRG)

Note: If you do not wish to support the work of McMaster OPIRG, you can claim a full refund by bringing
your student card to the OPIRG Office within three weeks after the completion of the drop and add period.

McMaster Student Union Fees:

Student Organization Fee 122.61

Health Plan Premium 57.50
Dental Plan Premium 115.00
H.S.R. Bus Pass 126.15
WUSC Student Refugee Fee 1.47
Ancillary Fee for CFMU-FM 12.50
Ancillary Fee MARMOR Yearbook 9.12
Incite Publication 0.95
MSU Sub Total
445.30

Note: For deadline dates and detailed information regarding opting out, students should consult the MSU

insurance plans webpage at https://www.msumcmaster.ca/services/health/overview.htm

Plus:
Administrative Services Fee ($1.17 per unit) to a maximum of $35.10
Athletics & Recreation Building Fee ($4.51 per unit) to a maximum of $135.30
McMaster Student Union's University Student Centre Building Fee ($0.63 per unit) to a maximum of $18.90
Student Services Fee ($4.38 per unit) to a maximum of $131.40

Add Faculty Specific Society and Support Fees:
Science/Kinesiology 50.00
If you add up MSU Sub total and total for students taking more than 18 credits, that should be;

445.30 [MSU]

112.25
[18+ Credit fees]
57.43
1.07
0.37
7.57

$35.10 [Admin Fees]
$135.30 [Athletic Fees >>> AGAIN???]
$18.90 [Student building]

$131.40 [Student Services]
+____________________ ___
= $944.69

So... yea where why are they adding $50.9 and why are we paying $135 athletic "building" fees and another $112.25 athletic "services fee"

*EDIT: Alright, I found the error, I didn't add $50 for faculty support*.

If you are going into first year, your welcome week pass is automatically added so that is probably the difference. This was started last year (or this)

Edit: $111.54 = macpass

Yeah I remember something like that in Engineering, they informed of that in my second year (the memo was over a year late), also told me about the option to opt out, which was due over a year ago by the way.

McMaster bureaucracy at its best.

Guess they really marauder-ed my wallet.

What I hate most about it is that many students might not use these "athletic services" or the "athletics building" (you pay for both of them separately?) or the HSR Bus pass, so really some of us might be paying $350 for services we may never use due to our course load. Painting every student with the same brush is unjust and anti-democratic. They are clearly not seeing students for the diverse body that they are.

The bus pass is a separate issue from the athletics fee.
If you don't use the athletics facilities though, that isn't a courseload issue, that's an interest/time management issue.

In order to get a super-cheap bus pass, nobody is allowed to opt out, based on the deal with HSR.

Can you please provide a link or something for that? I never used it in my first two years. How much money can you save?

Here's information regarding opting out:

http://www.mcmaster.ca/bms/student/SAC_opting_out.html

It's unavailable at the moment, but when it opens either click the link provided in the link that I posted or check out the MSU website. It will be plastered on their homepage.
