I'm sure this has been happening for a long time. And I don't remember them teaching me that.

Why shouldnt they do this. They are a private business. They have the right to get the best "bang for their buck" which is hardly Canadians. Replacing local workers with cheap, foreign workers is a sound and profitable business strategy.

what they did is pretty much illegal. If this type of thing is allowed to happen then everyone will lose their jobs. Private business or not they cannot import workers to take jobs of locals that have the skills and abilities to carry out the work unless no one else wants said job. This is not capitalism at its finest, it is capitalism at its worst and all workers will pay the price if this stuff allowed no matter how skilled or educated you think you are.

so you want a response, I figure I don't have anything productive to do at this hour. so let me take a crack at this.

first of all, its very important that you recognize journalism, and news reporting. The CBC, does the first.

journalism isn't here to inform the people. journalism looks for attention, views, and to gather new loyal followers to what it puts out.

second.

IS is always flattening the world and bringing down borders. Hiring internationally is much more common than you think. Do you have even the slightest idea of how much offshoring goes on? Offshoring is true damage. Not outsourcing.

"RBC is a bank, omg they're takin our big important jerbs". no not really. the jobs that these folk are performing are equivalent to being a serf at a mansion.
the economy won't be hurt either (if you can look at the big picture for a second) because they'll be spending here, living here, the money will flow back here, in most cases.

is it good HR practice? probably not because HR dictates that in conducting dismissal or discipline, it must be done in neutral context. ie. not training your replacements in front of you. is it good practice to not answer questions? no.

so yeah maybe they need new HR people. Otherwise what they are doing is very standard.

btw
although I don't like discussing politics, I am a "liberal" with experience in middle to high management at a canadian reit. primarily focusing on reducing frictions in the supply chain and creating fluidity & a network in between owners, leasers, builders, investors, and contractors. i also sit on a trust fund worth a few generations of your family over.

I think you're assuming too much. As long as they did the importing legally. It's fine. But what they did about training them in front of employees being dismissed, is not fine. Its a method of "constructive dismissal" (for the case of the employee that quit because of seeing this).
