Things To Do in Hamilton On Campus

Hamilton: More than the Steel City Part Two:
Things to do ON CAMPUS!

By MAVIS VAZ, MACINSIDERS

Hamilton, this city we call our second home, is host to many different activities and fun things to do if you are spending your summer here. Part One of the series focused on a few different fun
things to do around the city. This time around, we’re looking into our own backyard!

Believe it or not, some of the most exciting and fun things to do in Hamilton are right here, on campus! So if you don’t feel like traveling too far away from McMaster to find some entertainment, then keep reading, Macinsiders gives you tips on some of the great activities available to you right on campus.

1. McMaster Athletics & Recreation: Outdoors

While many of you may be familiar with the Pulse and the indoor classes offered by the Athletics and Recreation Department at Mac, they also have a wealth of exciting outdoor activities to brighten up your summer weekends!

For instance, if you are free on Sunday, July 27, you might be interested in the Grand River Afternoon Canoe Trip. Pulse members pay $40 while non-members pay $50. There are 15 spots available and registration ends on July 24th so if you’re interested, register soon!

If canoeing isn’t your cup of tea, maybe a three-day hike along the Bruce Peninsula may be more to your liking! The hike runs from August 15th to August 17th. Pulse members pay $200 while non-members pay $240. There are 11 spots available. To register for this course, you need to go in to the Athletics and Recreation office located in the David Braley Athletic Centre and register in person. Register early to reserve your spot!

2. McMaster Museum of Art

If you are looking for more of a cultural experience, check out McMaster’s very own art museum! Located beside Mills Library, the museum is internationally renowned for its specialist collection of early twentieth-century German prints and beautiful European art. Other than housing a variety of different artists and art forms, the Museum is a relaxing place to just take in all that it offers in a calm atmosphere. If you have any interest in art at all, or are simply looking for something different to pass a day, the Museum of Art will prove to be a satisfying experience! Entrance is free for students and by donation for everyone else.

3. Cootes Paradise

If you are on a budget, Coote’s Paradise offers some of the most beautiful walking trails in the area…for free! Follow the path into the woods behind Brandon Hall. Cootes Paradise is home to a variety of unique birds, amphibians, mammals and insects including rare and threatened species.

Several classes at McMaster (especially Biology 2F03) offer students the opportunity to go into the area as part of class projects and labs. But if you choose to do your own tour of the area, make sure to look around, look under rocks, and of course, upwards. Keep your eyes open and you may see some of those rare creatures that call Coote’s Paradise home!

With all these amazing opportunities right at your fingertips, it would be impossible to be bored during those long lazy days of summer! So find your adventure of choice and experience the many entertainment possibilities that McMaster has to offer!
