I was reinstated to Physical Science I from Science I. I took a year off of university and completed 3 Athabasca University online courses with A+ grades, and wrote a letter to the Associate Dean of Science explaining my situation.

Yea, I lost 2 years if you consider the year at Mac (2007-2008) and the year in between (2008-2009) to be lost.

But, I kept 9 units of credit (3 courses) from Mac and I have 9 more units (3 courses) of credit completed with Athabasca, and 3 more units (1 course) nearly completed. So, really I'm being reinstated to 1st year with 21 units already finished.

McMaster accepted all of my credits from Athabasca: I could transfer some courses as pre-requisites (e.g. CHEM 1A03) and other courses just counted as electives (e.g. PHYSICS 1*03).

There is a list of pre-approved courses here.

I should say that from talking to an academic adviser, it seems that I would have been able to finish first year by taking Athabasca courses (if I had taken and finished the appropriate courses) and then be reinstated to 2nd year at Mac.

thanks, that doesn't sound so bad and the website was really helpful but there are two athabasca university listed - one outside ontario and the other in ontario. are we looking at the one outside ontario?

finally, can you be reinstated for the summer term, like in may?

Athabasca U is located in Alberta. This is their website.

Most of the courses are done by correspondence, from my understanding, but a few science courses have a lab component that you would have to attend in person. For all of the courses I've taken they've mailed me textbooks, assignment booklets and study guides. I send assignments by mail, and I write exams in person at an invigilator (a business that has an agreement with Athabasca allowing them to supervise Athabasca exams). The closest invigilators to me were about a 30 minute drive from where I live.

I'm not sure whether students are reinstated for summer term. I think you should call your faculty, or go to McMaster and find out for sure from them. You could visit during their office hours, or make an appointment, and then just make sure to stay there until all of your questions have been answered.

For example, I don't think the Faculty of Science looked at any reinstatement applications to Level I for Summer 2009. They were probably especially busy during that time though.
