I remember back in highschool that friends from university would come to visit us when they had days off. However, as Lorend said, it very rarely happens to first years, and I would also like to add that it very rarley happens to upper years when you're taking a full course load. Personally, I've never seen a first year get a day off, just because so many of your courses are mandatory and are purposely sectioned across the week. I may be wrong, because I obviously haven't seen every single first year.
As the years go by, unless you're in a specific program that requires you to take lots of mandatory courses, you get the option of taking more electives and you get a more variety of choices. So in theory you are able to choose courses to leave a day open. But again, there is almost always one course that doesn't let you do it. And if you did manage to fit them into a schedule like that, they would not all be something you would want to take. Also in my experience, most upper year courses don't have multiple cores, so there's only one set of times you can choose. Except for the few that have the course in both terms. Last year I managed to get a Wednesday with only one 50 minute course in the morning, that's the best I could do with my full course load.
