Hey Everyone,

For those who have previously applied/applying to vet school, how did you manage to get volunteer opportunities with exotic/large animals? I've only been able to volunteer at a small animal clinic but I know that won't be enough for my application.

I've tried looking at the zoo and they don't accept volunteers that work directly with the animals.

Any help would be appreciated (for example, what exactly did you say on the phone as the words you use greatly impact on their answer)

Can't you apply to work at the zoo, or does your experience have to be volunteer?

My guess would be to look for any position at a zoo that somehow relates to large animals, even if not in direct contact with them - like preparing their food or cleaning their areas, or maybe even an admin position where you do promotional/educational material for large animals.

I suggest calling the vet school and asking for suggestions. I'm sure they know of a few.

You could volunteer at a stable with horses. Not exactly exotic but fits the large animal category.

You might see if anyone in the biology department works with any strange animals. You can always volunteer to help take care of them ... but you'll likely have to undergo a lengthy training procedure.
