Volunteering for a Prof
Hello
I have never volunteered for a prof, but I need references for the professional program I'm going into.

So...
When writing to a prof for a volunteer opportunity, what should I include?
-should I include what I'm going into and that I need references?
-any idea on how I should compose my letter?
-should I include "degree audit" stuff, or wait for a reply first?

any help / suggestions /ideas would be greatly appreciated

thanks =)

I am going to try to help you here . To be honest I am not sure what you can include in your reference letter, but there’s one thing I know for sure. So you mentioned that you need references for the professional program you want to go into. I just want to say that you should Never tell anyone ( eg. Your professors, tas, etc..) what professional school you want to go to, and especially if you’re thinking about medicine.

Most people would disagree with me here, but it is Not anyone’s business to know what your future goals are. Also, why should your professor know what professional school you’re going to if you’re just going to volunteer with him/her. Just tell them that you are interested in some of their research , and that you really want to know more about that specific field (eg. Biology).

I hope that helps.

I emailed them with my CV attached and stated why I was interested in their research/any background I have with what they're doing (read a couple publications from each prof). Some told me their lab was full, some didn't reply, and some asked me to come in for an interview. I ended up asking my prof for a reference letter to professional school but I didn't ask him until it was time to apply. No need to state upfront that you need them to write you a LOR (unless you're applying within the next couple months).
