What's The Matter With Cultural Studies?
When: Tuesday March 23rd
Time: 5PM-6:30PM
Where: HSC 4E20 (in the hospital on the fourth floor in between the red and yellow elevators)
In the September 2009 Chronicle of Higher Education, Michael Berube wrote an article entitled “What’s the matter with Cultural Studies?” Berube traces the impact (or lack thereof) of Cultural Studies on academic institutions, on American politics, and on larger questions of knowledge production.
This article has generated a number of responses, and has been read as both a lament on cultural studies’ failure to “live up” to its activist beginnings and an attack on cultural studies and its relevance now. As a way of responding to this article, I decided to organise a lecture where Berube’s ideas, in true cultural studies fashion, could be debated.
Dr Coleman, Dr Zuroski and Scott Stoneman will all speak for about 20 minutes each and then the floor will be open to discussion.
