For me it does, it just stores in Google Drive. Whether it's a word document, a PowerPoint, an excel file or PDF it will download. But in the iPad's case, you can choose to open it in a different app.

I've had troubles downloading PDFs on my tablet as well (android; nexus 7) so this might not be an iPad-specific problem.

That's odd..
I've had no problem downloading stuff on my Galaxy Note smartphone.

My parents got me a tablet for school in first year...i never use it
