Because if you're gonna wear a shirt that says "**** Western" you're gonna get disapproving looks and comments b/c it's vulgar and (some might consider) innapropriate.

But if you switch around the two letters, suddenly it's a little less offensive, it's kinda "cute" and it's kinda witty.

Thus, you get your msg across in a nicer way and you don;'t seem like SUCH a terrible douchebag.

I don't get why anyone would want to wear a shirt like that. If you're going to forgo any sense of dignity, at least wear a shirt without the letter switch. Why half-ass trying to look like a douche bag?

I like saying vulgar and controversial things. People are too nice these days. In the words of the great Marilyn Manson:

Be Obscene!

IMO... why does it bother you so much that these people wear these t-shirts... if you don't like it, then don't buy a t-shirt...simple as that. People like different things, some people think the t-shirts are funny and wear them. In no way can you infer that people are putting a bad image on the school, because like others have said, multiple universities sell these tshirts. So someone walking down the street wearing one, someone won't necessarily go" hey that person is from mac and they hate western..."
Anyways, to each his own, if you dont like them, don't buy them, easy as that...

And yet if I went around wearing a shirt that said "Huck Fumanities" people would be up in arms.

Whatever. Do whatever you want... I wish people were less reserved.

I would, but the whole mob lynching thing doesn't appeal to me.

My point is that people should have the freedom to say/do whatever they want (not including murder, theft, etc). If you don't like what someone else likes, then you can ignore it. Nobody has the right to not be offended.

It's merely a representation of school competition and tradition. We don't actually despise Western -- we are simply carrying on the tradition of school rivalry which has been around Mac (or any other university for that matter) for quite some time. Take a look at Oxford and Cambridge or Harvard and Princeton; all of these schools are undeniably reputable in the academic world, and yet they continue long-lasting traditions of rivalry. To be in fierce competition with another academic institution gives a student a sense of belonging at their own institution, but again, that is not to say that the student hates the opposing institution; it's just a harmless method of bonding with their university. There is nothing "classless" about it. If mildly-vulgar t-shirts is how McMaster accomplishes this task, then let students buy them and feel apart of a larger scholastic group. Let them go to any McMaster vs Western football game and chant "Muck the Fustangs" and, of course, let them hear the chants Western has for them; I'm sure they have just as many taunts for us as we do for them.

I agree with Shmowen. But only if McMaster used something more witty and less offensive would have worked out just perfectly.
Healthy competition and happy students!
