For required courses, it's not so bad. But it seems that every course that looks like it might be fun is not offered, so like good luck getting into Children's Literature and shit. But I am so stoked for 17th Century Lit and the History of Critical Theory that I'm not even mad.

Well, at least that makes my life easier. None of the courses I wanted are being offered :|

I was upset when I went to pick because there were so many courses that sounded interesting, yet virtually none of them were offered..

This is bullshit! I can't believe that garbage like "Women Writers" continues to be offered year after year while classes that spark intellectual debate, such as "Films about Filmmaking," are left in the dust.

Just wait til your 4th year when you have to ballot for seminars. Usually there is only one that is slightly interesting--and odds are you won't get it. Makes me so happy that I completed all but 4 units of my English major in 2nd year so I wouldn't have to deal with the awful offerings in the last half of my degree.

This isn't really all that bad. There are a lot of classes listed as not offered but there is also a number of brand new courses, or at least courses that weren't offered the last four years. Two American lit, one modern British lit and a Canadian lit for second year; nature lit, medieval lit (how is no one excited about that?), Age of Elizabeth, theories of language, the history of English, all of these are new or being offered for the first time in a long time. Departments do this often, they don't like to teach too many of the same topics year to year. Also, fourth year seminar on Film is new, as is the seminar on Sci Fi, as in the Canadian documentary and Hawthorne seminars.
There is a lot of opportunity to expand your horizons here, don't worry so much about whether the classes are going to be "fun," they'll be fun if you make them, and whether classes or fun or a complete chore has more to do with who is teaching them.
