It wouldn't be the first 'end of the world' during my lifetime.

1990
1998
1999
2000
2006 (06/06/06 or 666)
2012

Possibly others I hadn't heard about.

Of course being a 5 year old kid and seeing "DEAD SEA SCROLLS SAY THE EARTH WILL BE FLOODED IN 1998!" on a tabloid kinda scared the crap out of me, but it obviously didn't happen.

Lol I think this is a bit different! There is a bunch of astronomical predictions from civilizations thousands of years ago from all over. Those predictions of Astronomical "co-incidences" has recently been proven to be true by NASA Scientists. Eg the Pyramids aligning with the Orion's belt!

The dead sea scrolls was just silly religious based stuff that the scientific community hardly considered! This isn't tabloid fodder! It was 3 years ago so I don't have the specific documents with me but this one is close! http://www.greatdreams.com/2012.htm

If we're dealing with things of apocalyptic proportions, why is science any more valid than religion? :p And what I mean is, science isn't the be-all and end-all of reality right? It may 'overlook something important' as it's done in the past.

(Not to mention, the Dead Sea Scrolls are quite interesting, if the exhibit's still on at the ROM I encourage you to go see them)

But back on topic, sure there's lots of astronomical stuff relating to 2012, and scientists are postulating that a mega solar flare might hit earth (among other things) but like I said, it's not the first 'doomsday message' I've heard, even from science.

ie.
- In October 2006, a comet was expected to hit Earth.
- In August 2004, a comet was expected to hit Earth.

...

etc.

Well I consider Religion and Culture to be overlapping terms(Since Religion is a product of Society; while God himself is something bigger then that) and in that case it is the Egyptian,Sumerian,Chi nese and Mayan civilizations making cultural predictions that are now being proven by science. Even though science is pretty much everything the human society knows upto a certain tangible limit!

I havent looked into this whole 2012 thing at all, but how exactly did they mention this date, when that date (as we know it) wasn't even possible until the Gregorian calendar was introduced in the 1580s, some 4000+ years later?

And for anyone that believes in prophecies, Nostradamus also predicted the end of the Earth. In the year 3000 something.

The way to explain it is to first think of the Gregorian or any calendar for example to be relative! They never invented the days/years; the days and years were already there! The current calendar is just a record that starts from a certain date i.e: Birth of Jesus Christ. The Islamic Calendar starts from the conquering of Mecca and so on. However all of these calendars have been synced to previous calendars aka the Mayan and Egyptian calendar and so on....Its kind of awkward to explain in words! But they all point to winter solstice 2012(shortest day of the year!)

Every calendar is formulaic (although anyone who's ever tried to make a 'calendar program' knows there is some variability, and the formula can be complicated even for a 'simple' calendar like the Gregorian one, let alone one based on a lunar cycle).

Given that the Mayan calendar existed a very long time ago, all their predictions and whatever pointed to day "X." Then along came the Gregorian Calendar, and later, a formula for said Calendar. Upon 'converting' to Gregorian dates, we can see it points to 2012.

But I still don't think it really means anything big will happen. I've always kinda thought that it's more of a 'spiritual' date for the Mayans than anything. Like 20,000 years from now, after converting to some more efficient calendar, what would stop people from thinking "Christmas" was a sort of apocalyptic prediction? Know what I mean?

U wont miss anyone, u wont lose anyone, hence ... win-win.

Also ... this planet could get a 2nd chance =P

That's true, I never realized we lived in a time where the world was supposed to end so many times,
The only ones I remember are 2000 and 2006.
