2nd Year Chemistry Courses Advice
Hey guys,

I was wondering about your thoughts on some 2nd year chemistry courses (other than organic chemistry which I'm already going to take). Is there any that are similar to the first year chemistry courses Chem 1A03 and Chem 1AA3?

I've been looking at Chem 2AA3 and Chem 2PD3 and Chem Bio 2P03 and I've heard good things about those.

Does the math get a lot harder? I read somewhere that linear algebra is required for Chem 2PD3 and you need to know integration and derivation. And I heard for Chem Bio 2P03 there was a lot of 2nd year calculus involved. What if you never took it?

You might want to indicate which program you are in

2AA3: no, just rearranging equations and plugging in numbers into formulas. The majority of the course is more conceptual though, so math isn't really a problem.

2PD3: If you can differentiate and integrate simple polynomials, you'll be fine.

Thanks. Is Chem 2AA3 = Chem Bio 2A03?

if youre not going into the chem program, you wont be taking these courses except maybe physical chem which is prereq for few professional schools or if you minor in chem but not many minor in chem. chembio and biochem kids take chem 2aa3 so if you do that then thats all ud take.

Oh, so I can't take any of these chem courses as electives?

Thanks guys. The courses I'm specifically looking at are Chem Bio 2P03, Chem 2AA3, and Chem 2II3. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on them? I've read some reviews online but it was over 2 years ago and it likely has changed quite a bit since then.

Chem Bio 2P03 was pretty good. The content can be rather dry, but Kruse is great and he really wants everyone to do well. None of the tests had calculations (there were avenue quizzes for that) and it was pretty easy to do well if you tried. As for content, it's a lot of thermodynamics and chemical kinetics, but the work isn't too heavy and it's easily manageable.

NO. These two courses are *not* the same.

Chembio and biochem kids take chembio 2A03/2AA3 (these are the same course, but chembio kids take 2AA3 and everyone else takes 2A03 for lab sectioning purposes), not chem 2AA3.

No second year calc course is a prereq and I guarantee you 95% of the students in the class in any given year haven't taken a single math course beyond first year.
