$35 Laptop!
Unfortunately it will only be released in 2011, in India, but hey, for $35 it has some amazing specs!

Wow. I was thinking "How are they going to make any profit off that, there must be practically no profit margin on those" but then I realized their market is India, ie massive .

I thought the initiative was still in talks with manufacturers? Last I heard the leading bidder was a Taiwanese firm...presumably with factories in Taiwan/across the Strait in Guangdong?

They said they might bring the cost down to $10.

Honestly, even if the only function that thing had was Word, I'd buy it.

Guess not. A private firm would probably have cost quite a bit more - going through the IITs was a smart choice, since they're state-run institutions anyways...

Obviously you won't be able to get it here (for $35 dollars at least). I remember when the OLPC came out (the $99 laptop I think), the only way you could get one was if you paid double the price, paying for one to go to a kid in Africa.

Same thing will probably happen here... except after paying import taxes and all that crap, it will be the same price as a lowend netbook.

Even then, the people who are selling them are going to mark them up insanely since they know they're selling to the western market.

Just look at OLPCs. They're selling upwards of $200 on ebay.

True, probably will be a markup, but it cant be that much, since people will just buy a netbook or ipad alternative here
