5 Days for the Homeless

5 Days for the Homeless

The DeGroote Commerce Society will be participating in a campaign called “5 Days for the Homeless” which is a nation-wide campaign to raise money for the homeless.

During the five day campaign students from across the country will be making personal sacrifices to make their community a better place. Students will forgo their comforts, and live outside, effectively homeless, on their respective campus for five full days and nights.

The campaign is fairly simple. The participants will:
  1. Remain on campus for 5 days - The campaign begins 5 PM Sunday March 15th, 2009 and ends 3 PM Friday March 20th, 2009.
  2. Have no income -Donate 100% of the funds participants receive are passed on to each region's respective charity cause.
  3. Have no food or drinks - Food can only be received through direct donations, and all non perishable food must be held and donated.
  4. Have only a pillow and a sleeping bag - These items can be exchanged for an emergency meal.
  5. Have no access to showers, or facilities to which their student status would usually grant them access - Washrooms can only be accessed when campus buildings are open.
  6. Sleep outside - The only exception is if inclement weather becomes a health risk.
  7. Attend all classes - Participants will complete all academic responsibilities, including student organizations and teaching positions.
  8. Avoid personal communication mediums - Participants will be expected to not use cell phones, or online social networking websites (Facebook; Myspace, etc) during the five days campaign. Each region is encouraged to have one cell phone for safety purposes.
  9. Write about their experiences - Participants’ experiences will be posted on an online blog available through this website.
March 15th-20th, 2009 are our Five Days.

Four students will be sleeping outside the Student Centre for the next 5 days. All donations will be donated to Good Shepherd Centres (Hamilton).

Greg Morris (2nd year), Marcin Bugajski (4th year), Vik Patel (2nd year) and James Maxwell have already spent a day outside and have found it to be quite an experience.

They’ve seen support from students from different faculties and really appreciate
it. Spend a few minutes and show your support - please make a donation to help the cause.

Engineers do it for days at a time. It's called working on our projects.

How much income would someone normally get in 5 days? Or are you saying they can't work? But what if they're TAs, how does it not conflict with number 7?

There's water fountains and it can be easily arranged with friends to bring you food.

Right, because homeless people use sleeping bags and pillows.

So access to washroom facilities 24 hours a day.

Are you doing this thing or what?

Oh no! What EVER will they do?

Commerce students going homeless used to seem benevolent. Now it's a sad statement of the times. At the current rate of economic collapse, expect to see more and more of thems huddled around garbage can fires.

Danny, misanthrophy is only entertaining when your name is Greg House and your statements are based on fact.

First of all:

Quote:
2009 National Donations Total:$158,171
Point 1: Don't turn this into a hooray for engineers thread.
Point 2: They mean that they have no money to buy any food or water or anything.
Point 3: The campaign is not undertaken with the intention of cheating the system. It is charitable activism designed to raise awareness and funds for the particular cause.
Point 4: I truly do not understand why you would even bring anything up?
Point 5: See 4
Point 6: I saw these guys outside the student centre sleeping on the ground for every single of the days last week.

I truly don't understand why you would even post such a spiteful reply to a post about a genuinely benevolent endeavour. I applaud the participants.

also, lol @ adam.
