Accelerated Nursing
Hello,

Anyone who is currently enrolled in this program or graduated: does this program prepare you well or do you feel like you're rushed? Also, is it mostly PBL based? Do you do clinical placements, if so how many?
Any other info in terms of difficulty of the program would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance

I'm currently in the Basic (4 year) stream, but I can answer some of your questions.

It is PBL-based. All nursing programs at Mac, whether undergraduate or graduate (e.g., Masters) are PBL-based.

You do get clinical placements. There are less placements than the Basic stream, but you have to remember that accelerated nursing is only 2 years. I believe you get 4 placements (don't quote me on that) and the Basic stream will have 6 placements.

I know that some people will choose the 4 year program over accelerated because they'd like the extra time and be taught the basics. Accelerated does "skip" some things and get down to the information that you need to know BUT that doesn't mean you won't be competent or a good nurse. The expectations for accelerated nursing are different because you are expected to already have a university degree and some background knowledge (whereas Basic stream students come straight out of high school).

If you have any questions, the admissions staff for Nursing is super friendly. You can even go by HSC and chat with them or shoot an email.

I hope this helps.

Thanks but can you plz elaborate more on the PBL i.e. how is that incorporated into each course content?
Also is the final RN exam to get your licence written in the final year or after you graduate?

PBL will be apart of your nursing theory class and clinical class. Your "science" classes will be regular lectures (but some tutorials can have PBL components). PBL is all about learning in small groups and discussions. For example, you'll have care scenarios and a patient's health history and as a group work through it. PBL is kind of like giving you the problem first and asking you to find the information to solve it.

The final RN exam (NCLEX) is written after you graduate. You can write it in June or October, up to you.
If you're a Basic stream student you have the option of taking summer courses and finishing a semester early, but that doesn't apply to accelerated.
