According to my roommates academic advisor (faculty of humanities) thats McMaster's policy from last year. She was in the same position as the person who started this thread

How can you repeat first year?

If your average is low, aren't you just kicked out of your program or the university?

Nope. I know quite a few people who have repeated first year. At least in engineering it is not uncommon to do if you don't have the marks to get into the program you'd like. You mostly upgrade your bad marks and get ahead on electives and second year courses that you can, from what I understand

What exactly does happen to the kids who get close to a 4.0 gpa in eng? IF their gpa is like 3.95 or something, do they just get drafted into eng phys/computer eng? Would they need to redo courses again?

No, if you're under a 4 you'll have to go in for a conference to see if you can get reinstated either into a program or re-frosh.

By "re-froshing", are you referring to that probation thing?

No, I mean refrosh by re-doing many first year courses. You may or may not be under 4.0 *Shrug*

I know a few people that had over 4 but did it to get into the program they wanted.

when do they let you know if your request for reinstatement was successful? and how common is it? Because the undergrad calendar said there was a limit or something. Do many first year engineers get reinstated?

and if you have below a 3 can you still try for reinstatement? and what about academic probation? When does that happen?

Do you require a good reason to be able to do that (i.e. you injured yourself and were away during the year)? I don't see how this is fair to new students coming in if not. People who are repeating because they screwed around during their year or because they just simply suck at whatever faculty they're in shouldn't be allowed to take positions which would normally be given to new students...

Yea you do need a really good reason, from what Sally told me..brandon hall kids can apply for reinstatement..but again you gotta write a letter on what really went wrong and how you'll face adversity blah blah blah..i dont have it on me cause i threw it out just as i left lol...

Yeah, you have to talk to Dr. Coley, the associate dean. I'm pretty sure I heard him saying something in class about being sad he has to not let people back in but its his job. You have to go state your case, and they decide. Something like a death in the family or a serious injury or illness I would assume would not be tough. Just dicking around? That's harder to justify. Basically you have to prove to him you'll do your best and get the marks.

Dr. Coley went to Glasgow for the summer. It'll be someone else stepping in for him.
