Best Computers at Mac
Hey,

Just wondering if anyone has specs of the computers on campus? Specifically the ones with a lot of horsepower.

I have seen the big iMacs in thode but not sure the processor they have. I would go and check but I am not on campus much this semester.

my Core 2 duo is far to slow for the video processing I need for some of my work. My sisters i5 gets the stuff done in almost a quarter of the time, but I don't have much access to her laptop, hence the question .

Any ideas?

Yes, completely forgot about those.

Those are workstations meant for that kind of stuff!
Sweet, thanks a lot

EDIT: You just blew my mind, I completely forgot about those. I checked the specs and its a Mac Pro workstation, I will be going from a Core 2 duo to at least a Six Core processor. This will make life so much easier! Thanks again

lol dont expect too much. A "6 core processor" doesnt mean much...and it wont be "at least" a six core processor. Most will be 2-4 cores and could easily be based off the Penryn architecture (ie the core2 duo/quad processors). Only if fairly new will they be nehalem or better (core iX series).

Also if you need to run a windows program and windows is being run through a virtual machine then you will see massive loss of computational power.

They will be a lot better than the thode computers though. Most of the higher end computer labs are reserved via keycard.

I am hoping for at least a Quad core. They are Mac Pro workstations, that means unless they are really old, they will be at least Quad-core .

Either way it is much better than my core 2 duo macbook lol.

Lol they have gaming PC? I simply care about the processors. Graphics card doesn't matter unless they have hardware acceleration

The CPU is the most important, ram is nice but there will prolly be enough.

The GPU is only important for The editing, the part that takes the longest is the processing which is very CPU dependent. The GPU is only useful for processing if the program and GPU support hardware acceleration, which a lot of times it doesn't.

Yeah, those laptops are more than enough

I was amazed when I saw the processing time cut by three quarters when I used my sisters.
Did not know, there was that big of a jump between core 2 duo and i5.

Thought I would update this for future reference.

The Macs in the Edit Suites at Lyons centre are fairly recent as of now, here are the specs.

2 x Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.26GHz
6GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB Ram
