So I was accepted into humanities but recently changed my mind about what I want to do after university. I'm going to take the humanities offer because I don't want to take another year off. But I really want to be in the health science program... Is it possible to switch programs after a year? I don't care if I have to spend an extra year or something in school, I just want to switch.

Health sci has a transfer process for people who aren't applying out of high school, I'd look into it to make sure you have the requirements for that (or rather, that you take the requirements in first year).
If it was another program that didn't require a supplementary application, you could just see if you can switch during the first week or so of school...I know someone who did that, realized during welcome week she didn't want to be in her program and they let her switch faculties right then. But health sci is different, so that won't work if you want to go directly into that program.

jrol says thanks to starfish for this post.

its a waste of time to aim for health sci at this point. do you want to do professional school? going into humanities and doing health sci reqs to transfer into health sci 2nd year is a bad idea since the chances of gettin in are low and it would force you to take some courses you normally wouldnt in humanities. what do u even think you would get from a health sci degree? if u just want med school or something of that sort then you are fine in anything.

You can't do anything in humanities. Half the courses I would like to take require you to be in Arts & Science or Science. I want to do med school. I'm good at math and science, just didn't think I wanted to go into med school, so I went with humanities.

Most courses I'd like to take say"...registration in an Honours program in the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Health Sciences, or the Arts & Science Program". So would it be better to switch to Arts & Science or Science then?

You can do med school from a humanities proggram, I don't know why you think you can't. You are allowed to take all the first-year science courses except for the bios, which you can take in the summer or any time after first year. And you certainly don't need to be in health sci in order to go to med school, you can probably even apply to life sciences at mac right now through OUAC if you really want a science program (the deadline to initially apply is in Jan, but you can apply to new programs up until sometime in early April iirc).

med school prereqs for canadian schools can be done in most programs. and you can still apply for other programs if you'd like as mentioned by starfish since majority of offers go out after high school midterm marks in 2nd term.

I highly doubt you can switch successfully, the health science program is extremely selective. What was your average?

High school average doesn't matter for transferring, does it? I thought it was just your first year average.
It's competitive to get in, whether it's high school or transferring, but people still do get accepted each year, so it's not like it's impossible. It's probably not smart to bank on getting in or get your hopes up too high, but that doesn't mean there's no point in trying.

Good bloody luck. I would forget health sci. Nevertheless you can still apply and get in. But likely you probably won't, there are like 20 spots for transfer.
