I don't think cancelled courses are frowned upon, but you will definitively need to redo the course if it's required for admission.
I would take fasailuddin's suggestions to keep at it. Collaborate with your classmates, have study groups, talk to your professor and TAs and if needed then hire a tutor.
The best way to learn is to collaborate with classmates, they will explain things from different angles and one is bound to work for you. Try explaining the concepts with things you understand, like analogies. You will definitively remember analogies better than concepts.
