International Volunteering: Contributing or Exploiting?

Is it possible that volunteering internationally can cause more harm than good? When we volunteer overseas, are we gaining invaluable life experience at the expense of the communities we are working with? Come join our panel as we explore these and other questions. Come prepared to ask questions and share your opinions.

*The story behind your food: insight into organic farming in Canada

When we eat food, do we think about where it came from, or those that helped harvest it? Alvaro Venturelli, local organic farmer and one of the founders of Plan B Organic Farm talks about organic farming, sustainability, as well as economic and political barriers that are causing farmers to sell their land. Documentary Screening + Discussion: Standard Operating Procedure by Errol Morris

Is it possible for a photograph to change the world? Photographs taken by soldiers in Abu Ghraib prison changed the war in Iraq and changed America’s image of itself. Yet, a central mystery remains. Did the notorious Abu Ghraib photographs constitute evidence of systematic abuse by the American military, or were they documenting the aberrant behavior of a few “bad apples”?’

Youth Political Engagement: Are You Apathetic?
6:30pm in the Mills Library Connection Centre (First floor Mills Library)
On August 10th, Lawrence Martin published an article in the Globe and Mail entitled ‘If there's an inspiration deficit in our politics, blame it on the young.' In the article, he explains that if only young people were allowed to vote, the Green Party would be much more competitive with Canada’s major political parties rather than not having any seats in the House. What is holding youth back? Why are youth voting rates so low? Come join representatives from the campus, local and provincial governments as well as members of the Hamilton Civic League as the grapple with these and other important questions.

Global Citizenship Conference
The McMaster University Global Citizenship Conference (GCC) is an annual two-day conference held at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON. The conference is characterized by innovative workshops which are designed to facilitate discourse and original thought about global issues. Delegates are active participants as they define and discuss the key issues in our global society.
This year speakers include Olympic champion Adam van Koeverden and Chair of the Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction, Mark Chamberlain.
