class is full
so i understand that A LOT of people are frustrated with our stupid MUGSI/SOLAR system when it comes to register for our courses, especially first-year students who don't understand anything about university because everything is just so confusing, the Mugsi/Solar system is poorly-built and extremely disorganized, as a result, people are unable to register for their mandatory courses because all the spots are full!

i also understand that a lot of people post their questions regarding courses selection, such as "the courses i need are all full, what do i do?"
and the replies are always, "contact the registrar office and/or keep trying"

i contacted the registrar office but they're not helpful

therefore, i am just wondering what would happen if we didn't get the courses we need before school starts, is there a way that we're guaranteed a spot in the mandatory classes that we must take, or is it our own responsibility to make sure we are in all of our classes before the school starts, in other words, the academic counsellors won't able to help us

i am so confused, please enlighten me, representing first-year students, with your knowledge/expertise
thank you

I'm guessing you're going into Commerce? If that's the case, I'd email the office and explain your situation to them and kindly ask if they can place into whichever mandatory course you need to be in. I don't know if that will necessarily work, but if they can't place you in that course, they can answer your other questions.

It's not the registrar you contact, it's the dept that's offering the courses you want. You're guaranteed a spot in mandatory courses, but for most electives you'll just have to keep trying on SOLAR. It's still early, in July/Aug/Sept and again in Dec/Jan for term 2 courses, people are doing a lot of switching. Many things open up--and just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it hasn't You might have missed it. I've been in situations where a friend & I are both trying for the same elective, and she got it in Aug while I didn't get it til Oct, just because she got lucky and I didn't. It's a combination of luck and perseverence. Sometimes profs/depts are really accomodating granting you seats in elective courses, but usually they're not. It can't hurt to try, though, but make sure you contact the right person! The registrar definitely won't be able to help you.
