Today at Executive Board both sides of the debate were discussed. The MSU will now be moving forward towards lobbying the University to administer a policy of NO businesses speaking in the classroom as it is an infringement on public, learning space.

If you have any more questions, please direct them to any of the Board of Directors or refer to the MSU website for any issues.

When students talk, the MSU listens. When students yell, it is impossible to verify any claims or come to any productive conclusions.

Or if they are yelling and generally losing it you can still consider their information because irregardless they are MSU members and the SRA/BOD has a duty towards them. All it requires is for you to filter their concerns, tone them down and try and understand the "Reasons" why they are saying what they are saying from their point of view; summarize them and present them to the people in power(EB+BOD), that was essentially what I did today at the EB meeting!

p.s: I'm a utilitarian when it comes to freedom of speech and right of representation so my views might be slightly extreme for you and a number of people!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But yeah an extension of Matt's report; I essentially layed out the argument and the concerns I summarized from this thread(Buisness and marketing plan, safety issues, Franchisee contract loophole, soliciting in classrooms; targeting first years and so on). However it was a difficult argument because I only had official proof regarding their personal experiences from only one person on this thread. Hence I had to use the word "apparently this and that was said" more then once because I couldn't officially report stuff on this thread without consent. The EB generally agreed almost unanimously that NO coroprations should be allowed in classes(not just painting companies)!

But the most of the other summarize points from this forum and my research on it were kind of rebutted and disagreed with by certain "parties"(you can refer to the minutes next week to find out the details; I'm not pointing fingers) but neverthless I had long realized the fact that it is too controversial and unfair to College Painters to have a stance to completely ban them. Hence the second argument was the stance on painting companies for the MSU; I guess it will always be controversial for the body(MSU) that represents every single student at Mac should have a unanimous official stance in a murky issue like this. I still think the risky win/lose factor is against student interests especially when it is advertised the way it is! But getting the EB to agree on that would always be a difficult issue!

I would love to know though how and why Texas and Kansas state banned them :S

Another outcome of this meeting was the idea that the MSU should have a Employer survey where they collect anonymous data about employers in and around campus and then for the MSU to figure out an advising pattern.

At the same time I am still asking for people who worked for any Painting/Springmasters/Window Cleaning company or had a franchisee to PM me a report similar to the one T.Brown has posted on the board; citing your opinions and experiences and stuff like Period/Location worked, you can avoid stuff like who was your franchisee manager or anything you feel you don't feel comfortable sharing but I can assure you that this information will be used simply to compile more student accounts regarding these issues! The reason it is important is because I can't argue for you guys if all I have is random indirect rants on MacInsiders!

I'm glad something is being done.
I would like to get them off campus altogether. They are too sneaky (only targeting first years) and unsafe (don't follow any Health and Safety regulations).

I hope I don't see them with booths in the student centre. I want them off campus forever. Post flyers at busstops on Main Street, Subway - whatever. But I want these creeps off the university campus that I pay for.

Is there a way you could contact their student unions/student reps and find out? Or contact the adminstration of the school and see if they can direct you to someone who can answer your questions.

It is possible; but it was a few years ago. But what I really want to know is more universities who have done something about this or overturned an earlier ban and for what reason; Or it could just be that the Admin got political pressure from outside(a labour union or political party or a donor) or maybe that since they are a state university maybe they are governed differently then a private University like Mac? But what I really want to find out is more cases concerning such companies so that I have a better grasp of the pro's and cons'. It is very easy to get into a personally biased territory but that is counterproductive for any student leader!

Google News is pretty limited; Lexus Nexus is confusing :S Anyone good at news searches here?

What about seeing if you can get a hold of a copy of their meeting minutes so you can see exactly what arguments were presented for and against the ban, and the reasons behind the decision? They should still have the minutes on record, and you'll be able to see exactly who said what.

Why was banning them was the only thing discussed instead of making plans to investigate what would be in the best interest of students. I'm not surprised with what I just read. Seems the easiest route.

My plan now is to respond to the company and contact the department of labour to see what they would have to say on the subject.

Wrong!
University First Class Painters/MDP is definitely not a scam!

The company is totally legit. It actually gives you all the training and tools necessary to run your own business.

I personally made over 6,000.00 net after tax profit last year with minimal input (20 hours a week). And gained more experience in one summer with MDP than all of first year commerce ever taught me.

My fellow first year managers also made 39,000 and 21,000. Yes there is a failure rate with any business, in fact in the scope of starting a small business there is a much higher failure rate than at MDP/University First Class painters, but you would not be able to have an opportunity to make this kind of money without taking some form of risk.

Anyone who says that University First Class Painters is a scam does so because their bad experience with the company means they are not fit to run a business at this point in time and is not a credible source of information.

My name is Zac D. I go to McMaster University taking BComm at Degroote. I worked this past summer as the franchise manager in Ancaster/Hamilton. If anyone would like to question me email me at [email protected]

Cheers.

Ughhh. Please read the posts.

No one is calling it a scam. Some people want the company banned from campus and don't like the company because Action Pro
- takes advantage of first years
- takes up valuable lecture time
- doesn't properly explain the risks before they have you sign a contract
- doesn't hold their managers to any ethics or safety regulations
- doesn't follow the Health and Safety Regulations and laws

Why do you post in defense of the company if you don't even bother to read what the students are complaining about?

huzaifa47, Taunton all say thanks to Kathy2 for this post.

*facepalm* See the Irony in what I meant by Subliminally Manipulative and Misleading advertisements used by the companies? See the emphasis on numbers and hours over everything?

EXACTLY!

But the sad fact is that alot of first years and other naive people who don't know better will go OMG OMG OMG $39,000 I just paid my 4 year tuition and still have some money left for a nice car! Where do I sign up?

Weren't all your other colleagues saying that people failed because they were lazy?

Get your story straight.

Oh and sorry if you thought we said it was a scam. I would put it more like....

THIS COMPANY IS A PREDATOR
See? I can write things in big red text, too.

Well as a person who studied entrepreneurship there is a difference between being lazy and knowing how to use your time efficiently. Someone who puts that amount of work in a week and earns what they claim to earn obviously would be using their time efficiently instead of just being "labeled" lazy

Well the thing is if he did work 20 hours this goes against the frequent claim by the Company Agents that the "only" reason someone can not make profit is if they don't work a certain amount of hours! Apparently if he DID infact work 20 hours the numbers from your marketing strategy don't add up! Apparently it claims you need to work 13 hours a day! I'm assuming paint doesn't paint itself so a 8-5 paint job must defo be necessary in order to beat the competition(the other two companies) for both price and hours!

Hence if I go by that official "marketing" page he worked like 1.5 days a week? He still got his work done(How many clients did he have again?) If a paint job pays like $1000 for example how did he earn $6000 AFTER getting done with his costs?

I mean I'm not saying he is lying! But what you are saying is contradicting your marketing page! Heck he is even earning a LOT less then what the company predicts even for a "small" outlay. The Profit for a small outlay is $16,000 YES Sixteen thousand*You can pay your tuition for three years* five hundred! What impressionable first year wouldn't want that!

p.s: Oh and Welcome to MacInsiders and happy first post!

Usually when someone uses their time efficiently they are not out doing work that they can hire people to do. If this person has painters who do the painting for them and marketers who do the marketing for them, then there is no need for them to be out painting 8 hours a day to get the job done and 13 hours a week to get marketing done. It seems like in this situation he decided to spend his time "managing" the overall business and out sourcing what aspects of the business he could. The website may say a small franchise can make $16,000 but I believe it also states some type of time commitment that is required. I would assume a time commitment to a job like this would be 40 hours a week in order to make a profit of $16,000. But he is claiming he made less than $16,000 but he is also stating he worked less hours. It seems like a fair statement to me.
