Cost of Textbooks
Hey everyone,

I was just wondering how much did you have to spend on textbooks so far this year, how much do you expect to spend this year and how much of an impact has this had on you?

So what's your story?.....wishbone.. .. (I couldn't help it)

I haven't actually needed to buy any books yet this year, and I was expecting to need to spend ~$800 or so. So that was good, $800 is a pretty nice amount of money to not need to spend. More to put towards tuition I guess.

(PS a few people have come in looking for you today, lol)

I bought a control systems text for 1/4 of what titles sold it for. Legit.
(but then I found a similar book for 4$ at a titles penguin sale)

Bwah, I bought Signals and Systems book for 20 bucks when Titles priced it at $180 or so for a spanking brand new book. The funny part, those who shelled out that much got the book in black and white print. Ripoff much?

In my second year, I was saving at least $400 in books per semester just by researching the cheapest book I could find online, even the newest hardcover ones! Double legit.

Very true on the international editions.

We are currently discussing how the cost of textbooks and how book importation regulations has forced students to look for cheaper alternatives through online means. Basically book stores can't import books from the US if they are 10% less than the Canadian produced material or 15% from the Internationally produced material.

What this means then is there will always be 10% markup on books in Canada compared to the United States and 15% Internationally for textbooks.

I've spent like... *thinks* About $350 alone, and I didn't buy my chem book. I expect to buy the book soon (maybe) and then maybe a couple more for next term. .__. Don't like how costly the books are, or the fact that we have to have the newer editions regardless of the fact that the older might actually be better (Maths 1B03, true story. They actually had a whole chapter MISSING in the new edition that we had to refer from the older one).

I think I spent max of 200$ on textbooks, which were actually only reference books. Most of my texts are online, or I just listen to the prof.

Just wanted to remind you that titles probably won't be carrying the chem book, there was an announcement 2 weeks ago that said they were sending all books for courses ending in December back to the publisher to make room for Term 2 books. So plan accordingly if you wish to use title's special order form or ordering online.

thus far i've spent 414.40 and that's buying 2 tb used. But all def worth it as probably all my classes except Day's abnormal have tested pretty much directly out of the textbook or you can draw similar conc from the information provided in it. I expect to spend the around 1000 total this academic year as I have some courses that are brand new so probably won't have the option of buying online tb or used. But then hoping to get back 500 (across the year) if I choose to resell my books.

First of all, I greatly appreciated the wishbone joke.

I have spent about $400 on textbooks so far this year, and I'm guessing next semester I'll be spending a bit more, because there will be more hard cover books.

$30 so far, probably $0 next semester. Unless the prof explicitly plans to test from the textbook I will not buy it.

Thanks for the reminder. But the same textbook is being used for the second term, and I'm banking on that.
