Courses
How many courses per year should I take? My brother goes to Ryerson, and said that he takes 10 courses per year. I am taking sociology and I could only find about 2 courses for my first-year, which he finds ridiculous. Any thoughts? Or is McMaster that different?

a normal first year consists of 30 units (10 half year classes or 5 full year). so the same as ryerson. What program are you going into?? Sociology will count for 6 units...so you still need to fill 24 more units.

A normal course load is 10 courses (30 units) which is the same as Ryerson. You declare your major second year so first year is all general. If you're thinking of going into Sociology, take those 2 sociology courses and the other 8 are electives. There will be much more sociology courses in second year after you have declared your major.

My problem is that they say 12 units are mandatory. I took two major sociology courses, but they only add up to 9 units. Anyone know which last 3 units are?

Most likely your missing the elective (non-mandatory) units that are also required for your program. Check the undergraduate calendar for your program's full requirements list and it'll break down all the units you need to take.

Make an appointment immediately with a academic advisor. You don't know what you are doing from the look of it so get help. Advisor will help plan out courses for the 4 years you are here.

I would very VERY strongly recommend you see an advisor and read the materials that were mailed out to you and what is on the mcmaster website (as well as macinsiders, there are lots of guides that have been posted), because you seem to be unaware of how even the very basic things work.

It is ridiculous to only take two courses, unless you're a part-time student and working full-time or something like that. A "full" courseload depends on the program, but for most programs it's 30 units.

It seems like you don't really understand how first year soc sci works. You don't pick a major until second year, that's why there is only one full year sociology course. In first year you take a bit of everything. People in first year Soc Sci usually take a mix of Soc Sci and Humanities courses. Like what everyone was saying, see an academic advisor ASAP so you know what you're doing.

Yeah, i get that I have kind of screwed up with my choices by now. The only thing I hope is there will be a way for me to fix everything somehow. T_T
Should I come to adviser personally or I could just use a phone?

SOLAR reopens tomorrow for you to continue changing your courses. You can add the rest of your courses later. I would say that it would be more helpful if you could go in person, but if it's an inconvenience you can call and see what they can do for you.

Lol, this is both hilarious and pathetic. You're seriously telling us that you did no research whatsoever and are basically throwing at least $5,000 out there for no reason? At no point ever did you consider maybe using that magical thing called the internet and googling McMaster, course requirements for 1st year etc.

Either you're trolling or you're seriously stupid-either way get your shit together because a degree is not gonna fall into your lap without at least some basic effort.

To be fair, he is going to Sociology so give him some slacks.

For the OP, its better to go in and meet up with a advisor personally instead of phone.
