CURE Canada's Driven: Beyond Boundaries
This year,
CURE (Care for Underprivileged and Refugee Empowerment) received a $22 000 donation to launch the program Driven: Beyond Boundaries. Because Driven is a brand new program, a large number of volunteers (both high school and University-aged) from the Hamilton region are needed to help with the launch of this six-part program.
Driven is a collection of free, volunteer-run youth engagement initiatives for underprivileged youth in Hamilton. It contains six components, all geared to different learning-styles and youth groups. The components are:
- The Community Homework Club. After-school academic assistance and counseling.
- Cheza. A summer sports and leadership camp. *TENTATIVE DATE* June 29th- July 10th 2009
- One Act Project. A community theatre workshop encouraging youth to use dramatic expression to explore local issues.
- Day @ Mac. An exploration of post-secondary educational opportunities for underprivileged Hamilton youth through a visit to the McMaster campus.
- Life After High School Workshop Series. A series of workshops on how to effectively pursue post-secondary options (university, college or sustainable work) aimed at youth in Hamilton.
- ChallengEd. A series of experiential learning opportunities for those who live outside of poverty, to help break down stereotypes and barriers that impede real progress from being made.
All these programs will have mentorship, awareness and leadership elements built into them. Upon finishing, empowered youth will be encouraged to take what they have learned back to their communities. Driven very much reflects CURE’s philosophy of community renewal through youth engagement.
