The turnstiles at the Joan Buddle Desk scans all students with valid Student cards into the area. You can use all facilities except for the Pulse and the HPA up on the track, but that place is scary anyways...
The turnstiles sometimes go on the fritz, trust. I worked in the gym last year. Happens a lot. Sometimes it just takes a sec to scan your card. It should definitely work, though.
