Go to to class. Often, topics which were discussed in the lecture will appear on the exam. Profs also give hints about the exam content in lecture.
Do the recommended readings, if any. They often provide better depth and more information on the topic. Don't note down every single thing in the reading, just the important stuff. It's hard to tell what is important in the beginning, but you will eventually get the hang of it.
Review. Despite doing well in the semester, you may do badly on your exam simply because you didn't review the material throughout the term. There is a lot to catch up on for final exams, and with 5 courses in one semester it can get overwhelming to revisit everything at the last minute.
I know this is a hard one, but don't procrastinate. Seriously. Hand in everything on time, prepare for your assignments, labs, essays, etc.
Get to know the professors if you can. They help.
For many students, getting good marks in university is a skill that needs to be acquired. I know a friend who failed his first year chemistry midterm, but now he is in medical school. So don't be too hard on yourself even if you don't do as well in your first year.
