Yes, yes it is. At least for morning/noon exams. I remember reading somewhere that sleeping after studying allows for greater memory retention....hopefull y it works

The few times I pulled all nighters I found myself actually dozing off during the test...

I mean even a short nap before the exam or at random intervals during an all nighter would help.

Yes, I believe sleeping before any exam is needed, also not studying and instead doing something relaxing so as not to stress myself out before exams start.

yea sleeping is good, i recommend that you study maybe from 9 am - maybe 12 pm, then take a break and have a good lunch, and then take a walk or something to relax, and then study again from 1-4. then now you have 6 hrs of studying either all for 1 class, or you might have split up the time amongst more than 1 class's exam. then you could take a nap from 4-6 perhaps and then have dinner, and then you could study from either 7-9 or 8-10 depending on when you finish your dinner. so thats a total of 8 hrs of studying that day, and then you could go check fb or something if you want or play some late night cod until 12, and then sleep for 8 hrs because thats good for you, and you could continue with the shedule and get up at 8 and do your morning routine and have breakfast and study from 9-12 and so on...

p.s. if you think a nap is not necessary, you could relax by playing some video games or have a nice snack or watch some tv or go on fb and procastinate :p

It is definitely necessary...whenever I can't understand anything, a good night's sleep always makes things clearer in the morning.

Well, as much of a good night's sleep you can get during exams, lol.

Yeah deff. Last year I tried the not sleeping thing to study more and I nearly had a mental breakdown and I did horrible. Now my number one priority is sleep. I'd rather just not study but make sure I sleep. So far it's worked out way better.
Like someone else mentioned..if I don't sleep I'll start dozing mid-exam. And everything will just jumble together.

And yeah, it's true, during sleep is when your memory gets all sorted out..I learned all about it last semester but I forget everything already :p But the important point is that studying hardcore 24/7 will mean nothing if you don't sleep.

I always try to get a good 7 hours the night before an exam. I never sleep/nap close to the exam time because I am scared shitless that I will sleep through it

that is me right now. Since I am a professional procrastinator and all night practitioner, I have been up since about 8am yesterday and I have an exam in 3 hours. I have wanted to sleep for the last few hours but I am afraid I'll sleep through it even with like 3 alarms.

Needless to say this exam isn't going to go well and not sleeping will only compound the problems. While I might have reviewed 7 months of material in the last 30 hours, my brain isn't going to be able to recall that information when I need it too. I probably would have been better off with half the studying and more sleeping. Last year I wrote an exam with no studying but lots of sleep and got 93% when the class average was in the 60's. It was amazing the stuff I could recall when I felt good and rested.

Not sleeping also creates a vicious cycle of not sleeping. Throw in an energy drink or two to help stay awake and an all nigher can turn into back to back all nighters. Believe me at that point your basically fucd cause you'll be lucky if you can remember the name of the class your writing for let alone the content.
