In theory, yes, sleep is vital. I'm certain that I'd do better with a full night's sleep than with about three hours' worth.

That being said, I have terrible studying habits and eight hours of sleep doesn't do you a lot of good if you haven't looked over any of the material and your exam is at 9:00 the next morning.

Unrelated: who else clicked on this topic because of the avatar alone? I know I did.

Also, how are you "online now" while your account is disabled (suspended)?

I'm inbetween on this one.

I always hear people/profs say "It's better to not study as much and get 8 hours of sleep, than to study everything all night and not sleep!" I think that's BS, because if you know practically nothing, those 8 hours of sleep aren't going to help you.

BUT if you are studying pretty regularly and you've gone over all the information, staying up all night before the exam isn't going to help you much. Just study for a week/few days before the exam, sleep the night before, and it should be all stored in your memory.

I feel asleep this morning during my Psych 2AP3 final (literally fell asleep), woke up about 30 minutes into the test, did the test in 30 minutes, was still the first one out - but:

I either failed or did moderately well, and I'm banking on the former

LESSON OF THE DAY, KIDS?

EVEN IF YOU HAVE TWO VERY HIGH VOLUME MEMORIZATION FINALS ON THE SAME DAY, DON'T STAY UP FOR 25+ HOURS STRAIGHT

WE NEED SLEEP

Side note: anyone know what the LD50 for caffeine is?

Most definetly sleep is beneficial to the retention of knowledge. However as most people have stated, and as I have experienced on several occasions, sometimes an all nighter is necessary if you want to cover all the topics on your exam(s). I find that if I can sleep 8+ hours the night before an exam then I have adequatly prepared myself anyways and I generally get a higher mark on the course overall.

I'm pretty sure nothing is more depressing than seeing the sun raise after pulling an all nighter. You just feel bad in general... BUT with a 9am exam... is there even any point in sleeping?

Purely from a scientific point of view, memory consolidation happens during sleep, more specifically REM sleep (which happens about once into every 3 hour cycle of sleep). Getting at least 3 hours of sleep before an exam is important for simply being able to recall what you studied, nothing sucks more than seeing a question on a test that you remember studying for but can't recall the answer no matter how hard you try.

What I like doing is:

Sleeping without an alarm the day before an exam if possible - usually means I end up sleeping 11 or 12 hours especially if I've been sleep deprived recently.

However, the night before the exam, if I haven't studied well (i.e., if I started the day before the exam) I'll only sleep for maybe 4 hours.

That way, over the two days, your average sleep is still about 8 hours, but you stay up long enough the night before the exam to actually review some stuff, and you don't have to stay up all night.

What I did for math today: stayed up from noon yesterday until 7am today, slept until 11am, and then wrote the exam. Gave me enough time to start (and finish) studying without totally killing me.
