What does Cross-List mean?
Hey, I'm in Life Sci and I wanted to do a minor in linguistics. For Life Sci, I need to do 36 units of the courses in the list that is more or less any science course that is lvl 2+. Under the Life Sci list, psycholinguistics is PSYCH3CC3, but is cross-list with LING3B03. Does that mean the units of that course go towards Life Sci requirements AND a minor for linguistics?

Cross-list basically means that they're the same course. So if you're taking Psych 3CC3, you are also taking Linguistics 3B03. So I suppose it would go towards both.

I don't think the course would count for your minor, because any courses towards a minor must be elective to your degree, ie, they can't count for both.

Actually, you are allowed up to a certain amount of credits that can count towards both, at least that is what I was recently told by an academic advisor.

If you take Psych 3BB3 then it counts as your science required courses. If you take Ling 3B03, it counts as your elective, and will therefore count within your 24 units for a minor. So make sure when you're registering on SOLAR, you register for the one you want.

However, if you are doing something like a minor, you MUST be careful.

For example, I want to take a History course (Hist 2UV3) that is cross listed with a peace stuides course (Peace 2UV3).

To minor in history, I need eight HISTORY courses. If I register for this course as Peace 2UV3, instead of HIST 2UV3, I will not get a minor (assuming I take the exact number of credits I need), even though they are the same course.

bieneres says thanks to britb for this post.

Just wondering, since they are the same course can't an academic advisor or the dean just change one to the other?

I dunno. Probably, but it would be a hassle.

Question: If I want to keep my options open for a minor in say, Environmental Science, will a course in Earth Science, which is cross listed with an Environmental Science course (required for the minor) count toward the minor?

If it's cross-listed with enviro sci, and you want your minor in enviro sci, then you should take the course code that says 'enviro sci' unless the earth sci version is listed under the course calendar as a course that counts towards the minor.

Definitely take the enviro sci course not the earth sci one, they are pretty picky when it coms to which one you should take.
