Im just looking at med and dental schools and some of the requirements say One full-year academic class of biology etc etc,

so does that mean 6 units?
Do those 6 units have to be one after another?
Does it mean just 3 units?
A 6 unit course...?

I am just overall confused.

Any insight would be great.

A year-long course, which is probably just 6 units, but not necessarily.

One full year would be 6 units, yup =)
So if you look at bio... a 'full year' would be made up of Bio 1A03 and 1AA3/1M03, for example.

Med Schools dont just calculate your GPA based on the requirements....your GPA will include all of your classes (for the most part). The pre-reqs are just there to see if you can handle those subjects I guess!

So say I do horrible on Orgo chem (true story) will they include that in the GPA for sure if they drop my lowest year? Its in my lowest year but its a prereq?

Well, it depends on the program requirements.

If for example a dental school requires a full course of biology, then they will make sure that you have all 6 units. They don't necessarily take your "best" courses like when you apply for university.

When you apply for professional school, they will view your entire transcript and depending on which school, will calculate your gpa from which ever years and see if you have the pre-reqs (if there are any).

Well if you're considering Western or such (which only considers last two years I believe), then nope it won't be counted because it was in your lowest year. That's what I understand and hope though haha.
But for schools such as McMaster, that look at everything, nothing gets dropped unfortunately

It depends on if orgo is in one of the years that they calculate your gpa.

Im not in any of those degrees... How will I take biochem..? Can I ask the falculty?

I am not 100% sure, but I think you need permission from the faculty and some chemistry pre-reqs.

For people in BSc. and who are NOT in a biochemistry major or molecular biology major, they take Biochem 2EE3 first and the pre-req. for that is one of either chem 2BA3, 2E03, 2A03, or 20C3. This means that you would have to take 2 first year chemistry courses (Chem 1A03 and 1AA3.

Once biochem 2EE3 is completed, you can take other 3rd year biochem courses granted that you have the pre-reqs. I would suggest contacting the faculty of science directly.

There's a Biochem class (2EE3) that's for nonmajors. It's second half is a third year course.

A "Full year course" is a six unit course. It could also be two 3 unit courses.

I think one or two of the western canadian med schools calculate a "pre-req" GPA of just your pre-reqs.

For all other canadian schools, pre-reqs only matter if you have them there. For example, U of T doesn't count summers for GPA but will count a course during the summer towards prerequisite requirements.

For american medschools, they have a BCPM GPA calculated from all your science courses.

For the Biochem courses, there are two popular ones that are open to non-biochem students are 2EE3 (Metabolism) and 3G03 (Nucleic Acids and Proteins). The pre-req for 2EE3 is Orgo I (Chem 2OA3) and the pre-req for 3G03 is both orgos. For upper year biochem courses like Clinical Biochem (3H03), I think you can get away with having 2EE3 or 3G03 as the pre-req. If you want more details, just check out the course listings:
