I don't think your tuition is any different, unless you overload on courses. You'll just be replacing your elective slots with required courses. There might be a bit of an adjustment, depending on which faculty you're in, but it looks like Humanities and Soc Sci have identical fees.

(I know it's old, but the general idea is the same)

Hi Salad,

Tuition rates for those who choose to double major remains effectively the same for those who do not double major. The only way your tuition rate should change is if you add extra courses to get your degree done faster, or take fewer courses. Maybe someone else can back me up on this but I'm 99% sure.

Double majoring is just your program status and if you're combining in Humanities and Soc Sci your tuition will be reflective of Humanities student fees. You'll also be in the faculty of humanities. I did a combined degree (double majored) and it was a wonderful experience. Not only did I do coursework in political science but I learned to speak a new language (German) and a lot of European history and such.

You won't automatically be put in the faculty of humanities if you combine across social sciences and humanities. Certain combinations are claimed by either faculty so depending on your combo, you could be in humanities or social science.

I would suggest meeting with an academic advisor to discuss the double major. They're really helpful, they'lll print out a degree audit for you and show you all the requirements you'll need for combined honours. They'll also tell you whether you'll be in humanities or social sciences.

You can check out the requirements online by looking at the undergraduate course calender. http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /calenda...2008/index.htm Click on the faculty of social sciences and the faculty of humanities and click on the department of each of the majors. Click on the combined honours in _____ and you'll find your requirements.

You'll only get 6 units of electives a year doing a double major.

What combo are you planning on doing?

Everyone I know who has a done a combined Honours in a Soc Sci and a Humanities has ended up in Humanities...the only program I could think might be different would be Social Work.

I'm just repeating what an academic advisor told me. There must be some combos that are claimed by social science, I bet they're just not very common.

yeah I was in a Combined Honours Philosophy and Poli Sci and that put me in Humanities. I then switched into a Combined Honours Communication Studies and Poli Sci, which put me in the Social Sciences, though I still maintain a minor in Philosophy. You should contact your faculty and department to figure out where you'd fit under. Par exemple, Communication Studies is considered as both a Humanities and a Social Science program.

I believe it says which combinations are accepted in the undergraduate handbook. They also say that you can create your own combinations but require permission from the relevant people.
