People actually don't take the front-row seats first, but rather the 3rd-5th rows. In general, it's best to be about 10-15 minutes early, if possible. You'll find that if you don't have a break between classes, and you have to move between buildings, that might be impossible.
Yes, you go to your Thursday classes, minus tutorials and labs on Thursday, Sept 8.

People don't usually want front row seats (unless the prof speaks really softly/slides are hard to see). You should be able to get them no problem. I usually get there 5-10 min early. And yes you go to your Thursday and Friday classes only on that first week.

I'm usually a couple minutes late or a couple minutes early. Also, you don't go to any labs or tutorials on the week from the 12th-16th. They start on the week after. A lot of first years make that mistake, though, I remember showing up for all my tutorials on the first week in first year and hanging around only to find that tutorials don't start until the next week.

If I'm commuting, whenever I get there.
If I'm close enough to campus, about 15 minutes early.

Just go a bit early for the first week or so and make it known that ymich owns this seat!
And you'll probably get to know the front seat possy and they will save the seat for you

In relation to this, are the doors to the lecture halls closed/entrance is prohibited after a certain amount of time? For example, if you happen to arrive 5-10 minutes late, would you no longer be allowed to enter the lecture hall?

Why don't people tend to seat in the front-row seats and sit in the 3rd-5th row?

You'll see for yourself where you like to sit. I've almost always sat near the middle right section of the lecture halls. But one reason is that it's hard to save seats for friends in the front row becuase of the regulars that sit there already. Don't mess with them. Ever.

Personally I don't like to sit near the front because I fall asleep during lecture....often. And why would you want to sit in front of the prof, if (due to microphone/powerpoint technology) you can see/hear perfectly fine in the middle or even the back?
