If you buy food items, the basic portion of your meal plan will be used but if you buy non-food items, the freedom portion of your meal plan is used.

But the freedom portion is taxed, correct? For example, at Union Market and such?

Yup that's right. I don't think union market takes student card though.

What happens to the money left over at the end of the year in your meal plan card? Can you collect it, transfer it over to next year, or do we just lose it?

The Basic portion, you lose it at the end of the year if it's not used, but the Freedom/flex account, you can collect it or transfer it over to next year . You can find how much money you have in each here: http://hospitality.mcmaster. ca/mea...2009-2010.html
And everytime you pay for something, your balance shows up on the cash register and you can also ask for a receipt
