If you do the 12-16 month positions, you get more "real" experience, because it takes some time for you to adjust to a new environment and learn the tasks you're supposed to be accomplishing. There's a better chance that you'll see real results/make a real contribution to the company you're working for. There's also a higher chance of being offered a full time position after graduation.
I feel like the 4 month summer co-ops are often just a 'foot in the door" ... by the time you get the hang of what you're doing, your work term is done. However, they have the advantage of not extending your degree, and you can potentially work at a different company for each 4 month term which means you'll have a better feel for the kind of work you want to do and what kind of company you want to work for.
