File your taxes online for free
Hey everyone,

With T2202As having been released today, you probably have almost all the slips you need to file your taxes. If you want to file online, you can do it for free at www.ufile.ca. As long as you have at least 4 months of full time study on your T2202A for 2009, you can use a special code from the Canadian Federation of Students to do your return for free.

Note: You can only electronically file your return if you have filed in the past, and have a Netfile code from the Canada Revenue Agency. If you don't, you can still use ufile.ca for free to print off your return and mail it to the government.

i go to H&R block, get my money, and sleep because I know I'm not in trouble if they mess up. Plus, the student rates and SPC card are nice. I think I've used the SPC card enough to cover the cost of last year's.

Report the fact that you're going to school and spending money on education, which allows you to build up credits in order to later deduct them from your income one you start working to save on tax.

I'd just use quicktax personally (quicktax.intuit.ca) - free for all students in canada, you do not need to have previously used netfile, and theres no codes or anything. Its free because they want to get students accustomed to their system, so that you become a paying customer once you graduate. Take advantage.

sniderj says thanks to ViktorVaughn for this post.

You need to have income to get money back from the education credits, but if you don't have any this year, it will carry forward indefinitely until a year when you can use it.

This isn't for the education credits. There ARE limits on some credits, including the Tenant credit (claiming your rent), but the education amounts are non-refundable tax credits, so it doesn't matter if you make $20k or $500k, you'll get the same amount.
