Filing a complaint about a Professor?
Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has experienced the same situation or know of any possible routes.

I am a third year English/History major taking a first year elective in social sciences. I am not going to mention the professors name or go into detail, simply because I feel that is inappropriate. However, this professor is the most unprofessional and frankly offensive "teacher" I have ever encountered.

I do not consider myself a complainer (and this isn't over a mark or I'm not a "troll" complaining because I don't try, my average is 11.2) and I usually can shake off "bad" professors but I am paying more money than a usual course for a joke.

I am literally teaching myself the material from the text and only go to class because of an i-clicker. The professor is completely incompetent in delivering a lecture, using the technologies they ask their class to purchase, providing any assistance (and I mean any, whether it be questions about the textbook or the material or the assignments, they are all met with hostile judgments).

The professor is going so far as to antagonize and bluntly offend students on ELM and is completely inappropriate in terms of language and tone. I know that other courses have had to shut down ELM because of the same situations.

I was just wondering if there is anyone with whom the students can lodge a formal complaint - I think it is completely unfair that first year students especially are treated with such little regard and are faced with completely unnecessary obstacles.

Gives me an idea who it is, won't name names though.

You can write an anonymous letter, explaining the situation and show examples of the ELM messages. Put it in the drop box for your faculty and someone will look at it.

If nothing is done after that, go talk to the secretary at your faculty office. You can keep that anonymous too by not giving your name and student number.

eleduc says thanks to Kathy2 for this post.

Only in Comp/Soft Eng? Straight from Software people, I heard they disliked their profs and TAs. Materials Eng profs are awesome though so far at least so I have no complaints, well except Maths.

Thanks for the info.

I won't disclose anything about the prof, but yeah some of the details make it obvious if you have been in this person's class. Many people have been voicing their concerns and I just wondered about taking it a step further. Like I said, this isn't your average unhappy teacher, this is a very poor choice of staffing, especially for first year. I just feel like I want to say something, even if it doesn't accomplish much.

It's really quite sad when (paying) students asking for help are met with insults to their own intelligence, being told they should drop the class or hilariously insecure messages in ALL CAPS.

I strongly recommend that you visit the Ombuds Office; Shelley and Carolyn are really good people to speak with about exactly this sort of thing.
