It depends on the prof. A lot of profs actually start teaching after the course intro within that same first lecture. I'm not sure who told you that anything before Tuesday is orientation but that's not true at all. You should definitely go to classes starting thursday.

Most first year classes are just introductions; course outlines, when labs and tutorials start, etc...

This depends on what classes you have too but there are many profs that actually start material on the first day. It's not high school anymore =P
In engineering you start lectures on the first day right after they go thru the course outline... =(

Bio starts teaching the first day too, so don't just go by rumours. Attend the classes! The worst that can happen is that you'll spend a whole day familiarizing yourself with the lecture halls and their locations.

NEVER skip first class. It's mostly introduction, course outline, etc., but usually you can get really useful information.

Not to forget that profs will talk about textbooks, editions, what's required and what's optional, etc.

on the 8th most profs will do thier intro bit to the course, but they will also start teaching the lesson so its important to go to classes from the beginning. also why start going on tuesday thats like 3 days after the first day of classes and your going to miss a ton of stuff

I apologize for assuming then.
First classes are usually iffy. You won't learn alot, but you'll get alot of tips and key info from the prof which is just as valuable!
If you need any help around campus, let me know

Go the first day, you will learn important information such as what textbooks you need, what the prof's expectations are ect.. However, tutorials and labs do not run the first week

Most often classes don't really start teaching material until the 2nd lecture. Just think, most people switch classes around the first week or so anyways so profs take these things into account.

I've been told to go to the first one or two lectures of a class I'm not signed up for but want to get into when space becomes available. That way, I don't miss the important introduction and any necessary information. Go to the first class!
p.s. If there's a Super TA, you will miss their introduction, which is important because they can some in really handy throughout the class!
