Core=lecture, for the most part. Cores are things like C01, C02, etc. You should go to lecture...it's where you learn stuff

Tutorial is smaller, usually more participation-based. You tend to actually DO things in tutorial rather than just listening. It entirely depends on the class whether or not they're mandatory or optional, and how valuable they are. They show up on your timetable as T01, T02, etc.

A lab is work in a laboratory...lol. Hands-on experimenting, usually. These are almost always mandatory. They show up as L01, L02, etc.

You can't really say generically which one is most important for all courses. Usually it's the lecture...but I've had courses where the lab is the most important section, and courses where the tutorial is most important. Depends on the course.

Juve says thanks to nerual for this post.

Tutorials and labs are for assignments

Only a few classes have lectures that have a participation component, you'll learn everything in your first classes.

They'll tell you if they don't allow laptops.

Different profs run their classes differently. There's no hard and fast rule as to what exactly does and does not happen in a lecture. I think there's a push in first-year science classes for more participation marks (that will happen pretty much any time you see the i>Clicker listed as a course material), but that could just be to encourage students to attend class and go to their proper section. In upper years, there are less participation marks.

I know this question has been asked before, but I just want to make sure.. I have a tutorial class tomorrow morning and on Friday as well, I don't have to go to that class, right? Do we have to wait for the prof to tell us when labs and tutorials start happening, or does it start right after the first week?

No labs and tutorials these two days. Your prof will explain the rest when classes start (i.e. cores)
