They're completely unbearable. I've had one and I ended up sleeping through every lecture.

More so reason for me to avoid them, LOL. I really hope I don't get stuck with one...

I had 8:30 Physics with Hughes. I only fell asleep when Rheinstader subbed in for her, because he has a much softer voice than she does, which is why I'm glad she was my professor for an 8:30 class .

Agreed. I had math at 8:30 in first year and since then, never again DX

8:30am classes can be manageable if you live close to campus. If you commute, they are a ***** and a half (I can attest to this).

(also, this is going to be tl;dr because I have nothing better to do on a Monday night, so only bother reading if you want to know about profs)

In regards to bio profs:
- Kajiura (1a03): she's big on structure an organization. She can be a boring lecturer at times (particularly if you have an early class with her) but you get a lot of guidance on the material through the forms of skeleton notes that you can fill out in class and through all the review questions she provides for the midterms/exams - These are SUPER helpful; using them as study questions takes you through everything you need to know for the midterms (mostly the first one).
- Boreham (1a03): You guys don't have him this year, but for any future years who may have him and stumble across this thread, he's pretty rad. His lectures were one of the most interesting by far, his testing style is not very difficult (although he likes to test a couple of random details that he may have stressed in class a few times, ex. how far can a strand of DNA stretch?). Wise word of warning: don't use laptops in his class. Or sit near the front and talk noticeably.
- Stone (1m03): Honestly, I've got a soft spot for the guy. He sort of reminds me of the awkward, but insanely smart kid that everyone used to pick on in high school. He's really kind, though, and makes an effort to make sure everyone understands the material. His lectures can be boring, but try to find an interest (if even a really small amount) in anything he's talking about and they can be bearable. His midterm questions were not overly difficult, but I almost felt mentally violated after doing his exam questions.
- Quinn (1m03): Another really cool individual and good lecturer. I remember someone mentioning to me before we started the course that people nicknamed him "Dumbledore" but I didn't actually believe him until I actually saw him. He's really into his research field and incorporates a lot of it into his lectures (random bird calls, etc) but it just makes the lectures that much more memorable. His testing is not too hard, only so long as you take good notes in class (I used my laptop to take as much down possible) because he deviates a bit from the textbook.

For physics, I had Rheinstadter. He has a quirky humour that keeps classes interesting and his accent isn't an obstacle at all (in my opinion). His slides are centred around the textbook, but are organized in a way that helps you keep a constant order to your notes. I found that jotting down some of my own notes during class and stapling those to the powerpoint slides he would post after the lectures helped me study pretty well. He does examples in class that may help guide you through questions, as well.

From what my friends have said, Hughes is aimed at the student who likes knowing why and how you get to the answer of a question, while stressing skills that are transferable to a variety of questions.

If you like to learn, or are at least pretty good at it, Hughes is your best bet. If you're just looking to pass the course because it's a prerequisite, you'd probably do better with Rheinstadter.

I would expect that 8:30 classes are very manageable when living on campus. I pulled of going to one the whole semester. I woke up at 5:45 a.m., left home at 6:40 a.m., and got at McMaster by 7:40-8:10 a.m.

Sure, I was asleep during the trips, but if I could do this, you probably could get up off your bed at 7:50 a.m. and leave your dorm at 8:10 and be there by 8:25 at the latest.

Just make sure you get your 8 hours of sleep every day and (unless medical conditions are considered) you won't fall asleep unless you don't try to stay awake.

I used to fall asleep in my 1.30 Bio lectures EVERY SINGLE DAY. After a good night's sleep. *facepalm* I have no idea why. And then I was always fine in Chem and Physics a couple of hours later. Allergic to bio? Possibly.

Or you could just be so bored you can't be bothered to stay awake. Don't worry, that's how I felt in Math 1AA3.
