first year course selection, I AM LOST:(
Ok , I apologize for making 2 threads, although they are regarding 2 different topics. I have been accepted to environmental sciences for Fall 2011 year. My plan is to transfer/apply to a life sciences major. Now I have looked over the prerequisites, and I am so lost. It says that to get into Honors of Life sciences (II) I need the following
Completion of any Level I program with a Cumulative Average of at least 6.0 including:
3 units from MATH 1A03, 1LS3
12 units BIOLOGY 1A03, 1M03 (or 1AA3), PSYCH 1X03 (or 1AA3), 1XX3 (or 1A03) with an average of at least 6.0
9 units from Life Sciences I Course List (See Admission Notes above.)
Ok now, what is a unit? what do these represent? It says that I need to complete any level I program, how could i do that and do the needed courses above?
Also I plan to apply to medical school, would this transfer have an impact on me completing the prerequisites? Can you guys please explain the process of transferring from environmental sciences to Life sciences? how hard is it to get a 6.0? What courses are needed to qualify for all the life sciences programs at level 2 while meeting med school prerequisites? Thank you in advance

To make things easy: in general a 1-semester course=3 units and a 2-semester course=6 units.
the number of units a course is worth is indicated by the last digit of the course code (ex: math 1A03 = 3 units) All your courses will pretty much be 3 units in first year. I think you get partial units if you do super poorly on the course, but that shouldn't be a problem.

1) 3 Units = 1 Semester of a course (at least it does with most courses, there are a few 4/5 unit courses out there and a Thesis is 9 units even though it's only 2 semesters)
2) Complete a level 1 program = don't fail out of school during first year
3) No, this wouldn't affect Medschool
4) At the end of first year, when you pick a major, you have to select Life Sci from the dropdown menu, sometime during the summer you'll be accepted (assuming you meet the requirements)
5) 6.0 = C, so not too hard
6) You cannot simultaneously complete the pre-reqs to all medschools and second year programs in a single year

Ok so I did some reaing and I think I am finally catching up. I just have one question, do i have to take the requirements of enviromental sciences? What do they mean by requirements?
I made a list of courses that should meet the prereqs for most majors of my iintrest :Biochem, Bio, Honours of Life Sciences
here:
-Biology 1A03
-Biology 1M03
-Psychology 1X03
-Psychology 1XX3
-Mathematics 1A03
-Chemistry 1A03
-Chemistry 1AA3
-Physics 1B03
-Kinesiology 1YY3
Can you guys confirm if these would be the preqs (I have interest in Kinesiology its not a prereeq)
btw thanks everyone for helping, especially REPLEKIA and TailSnake (if i spelled those right) you guys seem to be the only ones helping me out on these forums.

Have you applied to Life Science as well? Why don't you just accept that offer, then you don't have to worry about all the environmental stuff if your end goal is med school anyway.

those courses look fine for admission into upper year bio/life sci
tip: if u arent that into math u are allowed to take math 1ls3... its like a life sci version of math and is supposed to be lighter than math 1a03

Just because you are in enviro sci does not mean you need to meet the requirements. All that matters is that you take the necessary prereq's to get into whatver program you are aiming for in second year.

Another tip, MAKE SURE you are on solar to register for classes ON THE DOT.
Classes fill up like crazy, and even if you wait until the next day, one of the classes you want will be full.

I'm not sure when it is this year. It should tell you on the acceptance letters.
Here, read this: http://www.macinsiders.com/showthrea...lar-17094.html, get familiar with what "Core" sections are, Tutorial sections, etc.
And just to go back on the whole "be on time" I mean on the exact dot.
You ONLY have 45 minutes per session, and there is a limit on the # of students that can enter solar at any given time.

A few very helpful and comprehensive guides have been posted in the Advice&Tips section. Everything from explanation of what the numbers in the course code represent to how to apply can be found here:
http://www.macinsiders.com/forumdisp...125.html?f=125
Of course these are old (1-2 years) so some very minor things may have changed.
