I got accepted in McMaster's Social Science I in March.
I was not guaranteed a spot on the residence though and that has really been stressing me out. Is there are chance of getting in rez with a high 70 average? What should I do?
Thanks for the time.

need to have above 80 to get guaranteed rez. if you can't make it, try off-campus housing. or commute if that's a possible option.

I think that was two years ago, because they grossly underestimated the number of students that would accept their offers to Mac, and also admissions cutoffs have been increasing while the res cutoff stayed the same (it was 78 or something back then). Last year, they moved it up to 80 and also probably planning things out a little better There weren't such big issues.

@OP, you would end up on the waitlist. I think if you submit before the deadline, you're on the wait list in order of GPA but then after the deadline, you just get added to the end of the list based on whenever you signed up...so the closer your average is to 80 the better your chances, as long as it's before the deadline.

It's easy to find off campus places.

Youll be placed on a waiting list if in this case. Dont stress, I was in the exact same situation as you in my first year, and I got into res in late July/early August. If you have a good spot in the waiting list, you will get in (I think I was the 70th person on the waiting list in my year)

You're honestly better off getting a room off campus anyway, there are a ton of places available really close by and you can make your own food rather than buying crap at the school all the time.

Res is overhyped; you can party harder off-campus.

First of all I heard many rooms were being converted from doubles to say bunk/triples. So you never know if yours is gona be one of those. Also the res experience imo was just overhype. Reflect on who you are and see if you will actually mingle/party/whatever with the people around you. It's easier to just get a room offcampus and go to the faculty events (which are most important anyways)

Last year the cut off was 82, I think, but my friend got in an apartment style with just over a 75. Don't lose hope, I know a lot of people accept there offers but not everyone wants to live on res.

Also just make sure to submit your application before the deadline because they 1st look at grades and then they look at if it was submitted on time or not
